About
- Built in 2001
- 7,840 square feet
In 1920 the Public Library Association was formed in Merritt, soon after the first library was established in Merritt.
In 1963 the Merritt Library moved into a new building. In 1971 it was suggested that this library be expanded as part of the local Centennial Project, instead in 1973 as part of that project the library was painted and furnished.
In 2001 the Merritt library moved into a newly built 7,800 square foot building on Garcia Street on the site of the old railyard the new library officially opened on February 1, 2001 and won the TNRD Library System the British Columbia Library Association’s Annual Merit Award for building projects.
The Merritt library pays homage to the old railway lot that it now occupies, the building resembles the old CP Rail building, marks on the floor where the tracks once stood and there is a model railway near the ceiling.
