TNRL Announces Spring Program Lineup

Kamloops, BC—March 15 , 2021 — the TNRL is excited to share their upcoming April – June program schedule featuring a range of events for all ages. Regular programs like Dungeons & Dragons, Nintendo Switch Tournaments, and Books & Brews will continue along with a whole host of special events. See the full guide at tnrl.ca.

Let Your Imagination Run Wild

This April the TNRL is inviting everyone to let their imagination run wild for National Wildlife Week. Celebrated annually by the Canadian Wildlife Federation around April 10th, this year the CWF is challenging Canadians to #DoMoreForWildlife. Children under the age of 12 can learn more about the wildlife and plants in their own community with the In My Backyard Bingo challenge, created in partnership with the Kamloops Naturalist Club. The challenge launches on April 1st and closes on April 10th. Participants can submit their completed challenges through tnrl.ca for a chance to win passes to the BC Wildlife Park.

Preschool age children will want to tune in during National Wildlife Week for two Storytimes featuring the BC Wildlife Park. On April 9th the TNRL will be taking Storytime on the road, filming on location at the BC Wildlife Park. Library staff will share songs and stories about animals and hopefully see one or two! On April 17th, BC Wildlife Park staff will be zooming in for an interactive Storytime on burrowing owls, where participants ages 5-7 will get to meet one of the owls residing at the Park.

Crafts

During the month of April TNRD residents also have an opportunity to showcase the beauty of their communities by taking part in our Make Your Own Mobile Library Craft! Pick up the craft at one of our branches or Mobile Library stops beginning April 1st. Participants can submit a photo of their completed Mobile Library to enter to win a prize.

Through partnerships with the Kamloops Film Society, the Kamloops Naturalist Club, and the Thompson-Shuswap Master Gardeners the TNRL is bringing residents special events including a sneak preview of the 2021 Kamloops Film Festival, the 2021 City Nature Challenge, and a small-space gardening workshop with a themed craft.

Art

This spring the Kamloops Art Gallery and the TNRL are assisting artist Amy Modahl with an exhibition launching on June 26th. From now until May 1st Modahl is collecting written responses to the question “How have you been?” Responses can be mailed to the KAG or emailed directly to the artist. Letter writing supplies will also be available at TNRL locations throughout the region and through Library Takeout. In addition to the artwork developed from these responses, the letters will be published as a book (with the authors’ permission) and catalogued by the KAG and the TNRL. Geek Week

Geek Week returns from May 4-8th with a celebration of Geek culture. The third annual Geek Week will feature Star Wars Trivia on May 4th, Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master Training on May 6th, and Stranger Things Escape Rooms on May 8th. As part of the week’s events, the Library is excited to launch a new collection of Dungeons & Dragons program kits for patrons to use at home with friends and family. Patrons who participate in the Dungeon Master Training on May 6th will have the first chance to borrow kits.

Author & Screenwriter Events

Through a continuing partnership with the Kamloops Society for the Written Arts, the TNRL will bring residents a full line-up of British Columbian authors during the spring. Calling My Spirit Back author and Indigenous educator Elaine Alec presents on April 8th, Robin Stevenson, award winning author of more than 25 books of fiction and non-fiction, discusses writing and publishing for kids and teens on May 20th, and on June 3rd author and screenwriter Roslyn Muir will discuss the differences between writing film vs. fiction and talk about jumping between genres.
