Tech Tip: How to Freeze and Unfreeze Your Holds

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when all of your holds seem to come in at once?

Did you know you can freeze a hold if you’re not quite ready to borrow the item, without losing your spot in line?

It’s true! If you freeze your hold, you’ll keep moving up the wait list, even while it’s frozen. If you reach #1 on the wait list, you’ll be first in line to get the book once you “unfreeze” it.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Open our website: tnrl.ca

Step 2: Click on “My Account” in the top right-hand corner of the page.

Step 3: Enter your library card number (found on the back of your library card) as well as your PIN password. TIP: Unless you have changed your password, it may likely be the last four digits of the phone number you provided us when you signed up for your card.

Step 4: You should find yourself on the “Holds” page of your account. If not, you can navigate to “Holds” on the left-hand menu bar.

Step 5: Select “freeze” box for desired hold.

You’ll notice on the far right side of the page a “FREEZE” column, with a box to select next to each title you have on hold. If you would like to freeze a hold, simply select the box under “FREEZE” for that item.

Step 6: IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “UPDATE LIST” to submit your changes.

That’s all there is to it!

You can return to this page to freeze or unfreeze your holds at any time, unless the status of the hold is already “Ready for Pickup” or “In Transit.” If the status of your hold is set to either of these, it means it is too late to freeze your hold.
