CO2 Monitors help give an indication on how well your home or workspace is ventilated. Poor ventilation has been known to cause drowsiness and headaches. Knowing the CO2 level can help you identify if you need to take steps to improve ventilation or air quality. Good air quality helps lower the risk of airborne infections.
For accurate readings, take the device outdoors in an open area away from crowds. After a few minutes the reading should be between 400 to 450 ppm. This means it is properly calibrated. If it is not properly calibrated, follow the instructions in the User Manual.

Our radon detector kits were generously donated to the TNRL by the BC Lung Foundation .
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It is invisible, odourless and tasteless. In enclosed spaces, like homes, radon can accumulate to high levels and become a risk to the health of Canadians.
Radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
You may borrow the kit for up to 6 weeks. 1 renewal is permitted, provided there are no patron holds on the kits.
Are there any fees? There are no late fees for using the Radon kit. Replacement cost for the kit is $300.
Why can't I borrow a Radon Detector Kit in the summer? In the summer months, people tend to leave windows and doors in their homes open, allowing radon to safely dissipate into the atmosphere. Radon Screening Kits will not be available to borrow between May 1 and Aug. 31 each year, as radon readings are less accurate during the summer.
In January 2022, the TNRL announced the launch of a new pilot program, Interior Savings Internet to Go kits. The Interior Savings Internet to Go kits have been made available thanks to a donation from Interior Savings Credit Union, to help in the flood recovery efforts in the area.
Chromebook laptops and Kajeet hotspot devices are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, for a period of up to six weeks.
Residents looking to borrow an Interior Savings Internet to Go kit can apply in-person at the Merritt Library.

ELAINE BURNS
Elaine is a Canadian painter whose works range from impressionism to landscape.
The inspiration for her art comes from nature, all she has seen and experienced. She has taken numerous workshops with professional artists Debbie Lively and Yvonne Reddick.
Most recently she has taken course study with the Landscape Atelier, instructed by Deborah Paris.
In 2022, Elaine’s work, “The Birds”, was juried by the Canadian Federation of Artists and she was awarded Active Status with the Federation.
Oil is Elaine’s preferred medium, lending well to her interpretation of birds, animals and the landscape.
About her art, Elaine says “it is my wish to share my vision of the world, with the world, through my paintings.”
Sage Advice by Elaine Burns Through the Portal by Elaine BurnsANGELINA BROOYMANS
Angelina has been taking photos for over 30 years after a keen interest in artistic endeavours since early childhood.
As soon as she finished nursing school, Angelina bought herself a 35mm Minolta camera as a “quick” art medium, as she wouldn’t have time for painting and drawing.
After 27 years of nursing, Angelina and her husband moved to the Merritt area from Vancouver and she began to pursue photography full-time.
She was educated in photography at Focal Point photography school, Ampro studios and Langara College all in Vancouver, B.C.
Soon after starting photography, she began printing in the darkroom. This is the "pinnacle of satisfaction with photography" to Angelina.
Now, she prints all of her photos at home using large format inkjet printers.
She attempts to bring an aesthetic notion to the real world. The artistic license allows for manipulation of reality when decided and to portray the world in ways not always observed.
To photograph much of her work, mountains have been hiked, roads less travelled driven, and many miles walked in darkness with her best friend Bill who carries the load.

Paintings, photography and other works by local artists are displayed where Kamloops citizens and tourists congregate. Other locations include the Royal Inland Hospital Clinical Services Building, Terra restaurant, and the Kamloops Airport.
Art in Public Spaces makes the Kamloops community more vibrant, showcases our local talent, enhances cultural tourism, activates public spaces, creates economic development and even promotes health and healing. The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library is pleased to be a partner in this program. We believe that libraries are a true community space and should represent and showcase the people they serve.
All artwork is for sale, unless otherwise stated, and goes towards supporting our local artists as well as the arts council in providing great programs to enhance our community. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce
Join the adventure and follow the flying books!
Morris Lessmore loves words, stories and books, and after a tornado carries him to another land, dreary and colorless, he finds a single book in color that leads him to an amazing library where, he learns, the books need him as much as he needs them.
This StoryWalk is generously donated by the Pilatzke family in remembrance of their father Ron.

2023 Read - Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard
Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest is a scientific memoir that explores the many mysteries of the forest, and of life. Through decades of research as an ecologist, Suzanne Simard has discovered that trees do not compete for resources, as conventional wisdom suggests, but communicate with each-other through fungal networks, sharing nutrients and information. At the center of the forest is the "mother tree" - the oldest one that nurtures the rest.
Simard is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia. Growing up in a logging family in British Columbia led to her career in ecology. She has lived throughout British Columbia, including Kamloops.

2021/22 - Five Little Indians by Michelle GoodWith compassion and insight, ‘Five Little Indians’ chronicles the desperate quest of these residential school survivors to come to terms with their past and, ultimately, find a way forward. Michelle Good is a writer of Cree ancestry and a member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation in SK.
Each year the TNRL holds a local residency program where we bring in a Canadian writer, musician, or screenwriter to put on workshops for the public and work one on one with local writers/artists.
Our 2022 Residency has ended. We look forward to hosting a new residency. Please check back later for more information about our next program.
Collier grew up in Ottawa and Montreal and is a graduate of McGill University. She is the author of Confined Space and Open Secret, both set-in-the-Kootenays mystery novels published by Simon and Schuster Canada. Confined Space was shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis Award for best first crime novel by the Crime Writers of Canada, and was the One Book One Kootenay selection of the Kootenay Library Federation. She is currently at work on a new series of mysteries set in Montreal in 1947, in which she turns one of her ancestors into a fictional sleuth.
Screenwriter in Residence 2021 - Ken HeganA composer, songwriter, and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc band member from Kamloops B.C, Jeremy became a full time musician in 2015. From early beginnings in piano at age 2, Kneeshaw is an established multi-instrumentalist – playing Guitar, Piano, Drums, Bass, Mandolin, Banjo, Accordion and more. Jeremy has played at venues of all sizes throughout western Canada, with bands ranging in genre from funk, to country.
Musician in Residence 2022 - Margit GossageRaised in Toronto and then Vancouver, Margit grew up listening to rock, folk and classical music. Her parents were music lovers. After moving to Kamloops in 1992, she built a successful career as a local musician and hasn’t looked back since her first gig at Sun Peaks Resort.
Raising her two sons in the country, the only thing to do in the evening was to teach herself guitar. Within a year Margit was playing small shows up at Sun Peaks and around Kamloops.
In 2001 Margit begin teaching private guitar, piano, vocal and songwriting lessons out of her home. Through word of mouth, she has been teaching for 26 years. Her love of kids and passion for music has made this a very successful career.
In 2008 Margit met Rod Bandura and there was an instant connection. Rod’s First Nations name is Little Sky. They decided to combine names and became the Margit Sky Project. The two have averaged over 100 shows a year since 2012. They have had the pleasure of opening for Kevin Costner and Modern West, Burton Cummings, Trooper, Barney Bentall, Elliot Brood and Ridley Bent. The connection between the two on stage and in life is instantly recognized. Their music is now being played across North America, the United Kingdom, Austria, Wales, Ireland and Scotland.
Musician in Residence 2022 - Tina HebnerTina has been around music most of her life. She grew up listening to her grandfather play the violin and spent many hours with him in his woodshop, watching him build violins. The songs he played when she was a child still linger in her heart.
She started guitar lessons as a teenager and soon fell in love with classical guitar. Tina furthered her musical education at Capilano University and studied with a variety of guitar teachers afterwards. Although she had ukulele lessons in the classroom as a student in elementary school, she hadn’t played one for a long time. Then she became inspired to pick it up again, and the rest is history!

By providing resources that enrich, educate and empower, we help make this the best region in British Columbia to live, work and play.
We strive to be a leader in celebrating literacy and transforming lives through knowledge and information. We value customer service, intellectual freedom, education, lifelong learning, equity, respect and innovation.
By the numbers:
Intellectual freedom is the right to read, view, hear, express and discuss any idea on any subject. Intellectual freedom is a key part of democracy.
The library has a mandate to provide materials that reflect the needs and interests of everyone in the community. We try to include materials that represent the broadest possible range of ideas and points of view. The fact that a particular item is on the shelf does not mean that the library endorses it. What the library does endorse is free access to that item.
TNRL supports the Canadian Federation of Library Associations Statement on Intellectual Freedom and Libraries.
For more information see the TNRD Board Policy - Intellectual Freedom.
Children have the right to choose material that interests them. Parents and guardians have the right and responsibility to supervise their children's access to library resources.
Intellectual freedom includes your right to express your concern about what is in your library or about what is not included. Ask library staff about the procedure to communicate your concerns or to make a request for purchase.

Learn MoreThe TNRL and Kamloops Partner Assisted Learning (KPAL) have partnered to provide one-on-one technology help sessions for beginning adult learners. Volunteer tutors are trained by KPAL and the necessary resources and supplies for tutoring are provided. The learner and Tutor meet in a public location such as the library and decide on a schedule that is convenient for both of them. For more information and to apply to be a volunteer, visit www.kamloopspal.ca

The 2022/2023 Campaign is live!
![]()
Each year the TNRL brings the Grade 3 VIP Library Card Campaign to all grade 3 students in our service area. This includes students in School District No. 58 Nicola-Similkameen, School District No. 73 Kamloops/Thompson, and School District No. 74 Gold Trail. We also include students who are attending independent schools, homeschooling, or learning from home.
Library card registration forms are sent home to parents by classroom teachers (or can be picked up from a library branch). Students receive their brand-new library cards within approximately one month of returning the forms.
Along with their card, they receive a welcome letter and a special sticker from Acorn, our campaign ambassador.
If you are an educator or parent who would like to participate, email grade3vip@tnrd.ca for more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is the Campaign & why should we participate? We want to give all grade 3 students in our service area access to the public library through a free library card! We know that students with strong literacy skills do better, not just in school but in life. We want to support students, parents, schools, and educators by providing free access to the wide range of materials available through our library system. With a free library card, children will have access to all the library has to offer – including books, movies, video games, eBooks, audiobooks, online databases, musical instruments, and more. Classes with the highest percentage of forms returned will receive a $50 Chapters gift card to purchase classroom books. Why Grade 3? By the time most children enter grade 3, they are able to read and are beginning to be more independent in deciding on their leisure activities. It’s also a time when homework isn’t yet too onerous and where kids can read for pleasure. By imparting a love of books and reading, and creating a habit of visiting the public library, we can help to ensure high literacy rates among our population and in turn the health of all our communities. What if I have more questions? Contact us at grade3vip@tnrd.ca.For Parents/Guardians
What about kids who are not in a traditional school setting? The Campaign is for any children at a grade 3 level who are studying in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. We also include students who are attending independent schools, homeschooling, or learning from home. How can I sign my children up? Check with your child’s classroom teacher to see if they are participating in this year’s campaign. If they are, they will send a registration form home with your child. If your child is learning outside of a traditional school setting, please contact your local library branch to register your child. What if my child already has a TNRL card? This is a great opportunity to ensure that your child’s library card is up to date and we have the correct contact information for you on file. Please provide us with your updated information by filling out the registration form or indicate on the form that your child’s card is up to date. For Educators
What about split classes? All students in split classes are welcome to participate, whether it is K-3, 2/3, 3/4 or something else! How does the Campaign work? Each year we reach out to all the schools in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District to invite them to participate in the Campaign. Print or electronic information packages and registration forms are then provided to all participating schools or classrooms. Educators are asked to send a letter and registration form home with each student for their parent/guardian to complete. What do I do with the completed library card application forms? Once you have all the completed forms and parent/guardian letters fill out the Completed Forms Cover Sheet that was provided with the forms. Attach the Cover Sheet to the student forms and return them to the library. The cover sheet and forms can be either:
